Galveston definitely has its own unique brand of people and it is an island where these people definitely operate on island time. After being told we needed to be there at 9;45, we finally started getting on the horses at 10:45 for our 10am ride. Horse assignment was quite an event. Seems that there were quite a few beginner riders but not enough beginner horses. Being that I had to ride double with Emma, my horse was easy to pick. But that left Abby as the seasoned veteran of the group. So she was given the most ornery, stubborn, mean horse in the barn. Because she was skilled and could handle it. As a mother, you know it scared the crap out of me to hear the man describe the horse in that way. But Abby sure did show "Joe" who was boss, and did a great job of keeping that horse under control.
Then there's Alli, who was just not too keen on the idea of getting up on a 1,000 pound animal. So she was given a sweet little pony named Princess. Truly, it was meant to be.
The ride itself was quite an adventure. Seems the horses get a little spooked by loud noises, like a giant crane slamming wooden piers into the ground while constructing a new neighborhood of beach houses. Yeah, they didn't like that so much. And the guide kind of forgot to let me and Abby know that both of our horses apparently have amorous feelings for a certain mare in the group. And that Abby's horse will get after any other horse that gets close to that certain mare, mostly being mine!
We had our moments. Abby really enjoyed herself, Alli looked quite regal the whole ride, and Emma was bored within 5 minutes and wanted to know what we were doing next. It was another thing to scratch off our list of things we haven't done in Galveston. The list is dwindling... The shark boat trip is still on there, hopefully it will be for a LONG time!
